Processing story / Crescent Nebula - NGC6888
Let the shell stand alone
A delicate teal shell, a landscape of red filaments, and the decision to leave the stars behind. Twenty hours of Hα and OIII exposure reveal the Crescent within its surrounding clouds.

Give the shell room to breathe.
Removing the stars changed how I saw this field. The Crescent became the focal point, but the surrounding emission gave it context: sweeping red filaments, quieter teal regions, and dark spaces between them. I chose to keep the final image starless so those relationships could carry the composition. Getting there meant knowing when to step back. A stronger denoising trial left texture I did not like once the stars were removed. Background neutralization took away the teal I wanted to preserve. Both decisions were revisited, letting the fine shell and the wider clouds guide the finish.
The pivotal choice was to leave the stars out. A gentler denoising pass became the foundation, and a background-neutralization trial was undone when it weakened the shell’s wanted teal color. Selective red and cyan adjustments preserved that fragile envelope within the wider red landscape.

Both linear versions use the identical linked saved display stretch from the NXT v2 image (midtones 0.0005817649071104825, shadows 0.001075724139809608, highlights 1.0). No separate brightness matching was applied. This is a display-stretched comparison, not the final permanent stretch.

Complete saved versions, with no added stretch or brightness matching. This comparison combines the accepted finishing edits and does not isolate a single adjustment. Web derivatives were resized proportionally; the original masters are unchanged.

240 exposures at 300 seconds each: 95 Hα frames (7 h 55 min) and 145 OIII frames (12 h 05 min), totaling 20 hours. Hα maps to red; OIII maps to green and blue. No SII channel is confirmed, and no LinearFit operation was performed in the documented workflow. The final image remains starless.
